Likewise, in the American League, the Los Angeles Angels, the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago White Sox, the Detroit Tigers, and the Seattle Mariners all have payrolls over $100 million and the New York Yankees and a payroll of over $200 million. The Toronto Blue Jays also came up just short of the $100 million marks, meaning that the American League had seven teams with these extremely high payrolls. The only reason why these teams a re able to spend so much is that they are popular in their own markets, which happens because they hit a lot of home runs.
